Michael Tilson Thomas (aka “MTT”) was the conductor of many orchestras. I saw him conducting the San Francisco Symphony when I lived there in the 1990’s. I was a lucky guy: a close friend worked for the Symphony and gave me free tickets on a regular basis.
I went a lot. What a joy.
MTT had very eclectic taste in music: over time, I was exposed to just about every style/taste/era/composer. I must have done something right to have such good karma for such good (and free) seats!
MTT was openly gay at a time when few composers were. He met his husband in Junior High, MTT was 12, his husband Josh was 11. Both were in the orchestra. They were together for almost 50 years. His husband died only a few months ago.
If you want to know more about his musical talents, a regular bio will give it to you. I just wanted to salute MTT because he educated me about classical music through his passion, knowledge and enthusiasm and inspired me as a gay man who was proud of who he was and had a loving partner for the majority of his adult life.
Rest in peace MTT. I’m sure you’re on to your next great adventure…
